Irish Blackthorn Walking Sticks, Walking Canes or Shillelaghs: Best Gift for St Patrick's Day
A Great Gift for Anyone who Enjoys the Great Outdoors
Once thought as a shillelagh (or a protective or fighting cudgel), the blackthorn walking stick measures about a yard long, and is primarily used, as the name suggests, for walking and hiking. Given that Ireland is a place with vast expanses of trails and hills to cover, the blackthorn walking canes is the perfect gift to give anyone who appreciates the "Great Outdoors".
Practical and Collectible
The stick typically features glossy wood and a strap made of authentic leather. It's a piece of Irish history that can serve as a collectible or can provide a durable means of support for any uphill climb. The longer version of the bata (fighting stick) owes its name "shillelagh" to the town of Shillelagh and its blackthorn forest, both which can be found in the county of Wicklow southeast in Ireland.
An Exceptionally Durable Cane
While the stick can be made of other wood materials, such as ash or oak, blackthorn guarantees the longevity of the cudgel. Plus, the knob at the end of the walking cane is made from the plant's root. In days of yore, blackthorn, an especially tough wood, was the preferred source as the shillelagh was used for fighting. Therefore, it required an exceptionally strong type of wood for purposes of defense.
Keep your Balance and Look Good at the Same Time
Using a walking stick made of blackthorn then is especially useful for anyone who needs sturdy support for walking and keeping their balance. A practical object, the walking stick is stylish as well. A blackthorn Irish walking stick, in particular, is always an appreciated cane, and a good way to keep from falling on fragile ground.
A Utilitarian Item
Sheepherders in Ireland also find use for the stick too. Therefore, on the Emerald Green Isle, the stick takes many forms and is used in a variety of ways. However, the walking cane is still a preferred pick of many dedicated pedestrians. Wayfarers, young and old alike, enjoy using the blackthorn walking stick. In fact, studies confirm that walkers who use a walking stick burn more calories and tread over more area than trekkers and hikers who forgot using such an assist. It may be because the stick causes you to challenge yourself more and take paths that are more difficult. After all, how many people would decide to amble up a steep grade without the aid of a walking stick or cane?
Receive the Full Benefits of Exercise
In addition, because you are using the stick to support your back and leg muscles, you are able to keep pace for a longer period of time and walk even further than you thought possible. A walking stick also serves as a type of weight. Therefore, you can combine weight training with walking to obtain the full benefits of the exercise.
A Treasured Icon
Whether you know someone who'd like to get into better shape or an individual who is interested in Irish folklore and tradition, a blackthorn walking sticks is the perfect gift to give on Saint Patrick's Day or during any time of the year. A blackthorn walking sticks, especially, is one of those enduring items that, when given as a present or chosen for personal use, is a cherished and appreciated cane and collectible.

CHECK US OUT ON ELLEN! www.youtube.com My 3 year old fibbing to my face, and it is surprisingly cute haha! After I filmed it we had a VERY long talk about the difference between telling the truth and not telling the truth. He has an amazing imagination and loves to tell us stories. I saw this as a sweet moment, something that every child goes through...where they try to push the boundaries to see how far they can go. And I thought I'd share it with my friends and family. And apparently, the world seems to enjoy it, too. We are currently working on the difference, and he is doing really well. :) Side note: My son does NOT have a filling or a cavaty. He was eating breakfast at the time of Sprinklegate, and that is just some of his breakfast cereal in his teeth. It is a low quality video, and it just showed up in a funky color. But he does NOT eat sweets all the time (ah! Hence the binge!), and his teeth are healthy and beautiful.
